swishy, sewusie noun a hare la19-20. etymology: possibly onomatopoeic but perhaps a development from an older Romany word, see note from Grellmann (1787) below; attested by Galloway Tinkler-Gypsies where McCormick suggests the origin is English Romany but I can find no current evidence for this; both forms also collected by Joseph F G S Lucas from Kirk Yetholm Gypsies note:

Grellmann (1787) collected the forms Schoschi, Tschoschai with the same meaning from Continental gipsies and the above may be a development from these. Smart & Crofton (1875) collected the forms Shoshó, Shóshi ‘a rabbit’ from English Gypsies.
