noun a word 20. etymology: Hindi māmg ‘cry, request, demand, call’; defined by Partridge as follows: To talk; boast (mainly Scottish) Cant of circa 1810-90. (Vaux.) ? a corruption of mag ‘to talk’, influenced by Romany mang, mong, ‘beg request.; also attested in Older Scots ‘To bewilder, bemuse, perplex; to stupefy, daze; to misguide, lead astray or into error’; also attested in Shelta; collected by EMcC/PS; the noun only collected by McCormick; verb attested by SR, BS in TDITA, SS, ET, DW and collected by Rev John Baird from Kirk Yetholm Gypsies and Simson (1865); form mag attested by Grose and Egan (1823) as ‘Cant’ but they also attest mang ‘to boast’ both as ‘Scotch Cant’ note:

Grellmann (1787) collected the forms Mangawa ‘To beg.’, Mongna ‘To ʃeek’ from Continental gipsies. Smart & Crofton (1875) collected the form mong ‘to beg, pray, request;’ from English Gypsies.

Form mang attested by Canadian Paul Pope (2013) which he defines as: ‘to ask, to speak’.
