Billy Marshall, reputedly lived from (1672-1792) and was a ‘King of the Gypsies’ he lived in south-east Scotland. He was a leveller who organized protests against enclosure and was indeed head of a group of Gypsy Tinkers. He is buried in the graveyard at St Cuthbert’s Church in Kirkcudbright. His grave is much visited by Travellers, Gypsies and non-Travellers.
